What this service is

Japan Hand provides medical accompaniment and interpretation for visitors who need to see a doctor, dentist, or pharmacist in Japan. Your helper finds an appropriate clinic, accompanies you to the appointment, completes the registration paperwork, explains your symptoms and medical history to the doctor, interprets the diagnosis back to you, assists with payment, and accompanies you to the pharmacy to explain your medication.

Japan’s healthcare system is excellent, affordable, and widely available, but most neighbourhood clinics operate almost entirely in Japanese. Registration forms, hospital signs, prescriptions, and conversations with medical staff are often difficult for international visitors to understand.

When you’re ill, clear communication matters. Describing symptoms accurately, explaining your medical history, current medications, and allergies can make a significant difference to your treatment. Your helper ensures nothing is misunderstood and helps you ask the questions you came to ask.

This service provides language and practical support only. Your helper is not a medical professional and does not provide medical advice. In a genuine emergency, always call 119 first, then contact us if you would like a helper to join you at the hospital.

The Problems We Solve

  • Most local clinics offer limited English support – Neighborhood clinics, where most non-emergency treatment takes place, often have little or no English-speaking staff.
  • Medical paperwork is in Japanese – Registration forms and medical history questionnaires are typically available only in Japanese and require accurate information.
  • Explaining symptoms can be difficult – Describing medical conditions clearly often requires more language fluency than translation apps or phrasebooks can provide.
  • Medical communication can be unclear – Understanding a diagnosis, treatment plan, or follow-up instructions is challenging when both patient and healthcare provider rely on a second language.
  • Medications may differ from home – Medicine names, formulations, and packaging are often different and are usually labeled only in Japanese.
  • Healthcare costs may be unexpected – International visitors pay without Japan’s national health insurance, and treatment costs are not always explained clearly before care is provided.
